The base of a moss-covered beech tree trunk is shown on the right, and young lime tree leaves are in the left foreground. The picture represents air, water, and sunlight, all needed by leaves to make food. The carpet of dead beech leaves slowly decay and release minerals into the water which may be taken up by the tree roots and used to make new leaves. Underlying this living system, at the bottom of the painting, is a hint at the physical order in nature; rocks on the stream bed are magnified to show layers and rows of atoms.
